Set Design - Sly and Single Again

This is another installment in the unofficial "I only watch it for the set design" series.  While I know at least one of you is probably shaking your head at my selection of 'stories', I do enjoy them all without discrimination.

About a year ago I watched Sly and Single Again and it was really funny but also had some amazing sets.  Of course I took a liberal amount of screen shots.  The images below are only of the apartment, not of the 4 or 5 amazing restaurants they shot scenes in.

I love the stripes on this building, it's not part of the set design but a great location to film.

This apartment was one of my favorite parts.  The Rhythm Pendant below is one I almost snuck into a project but then the client lost the space they were moving into and it hasn't made it back into a project yet.  That flush linear light is one I use all the time in commercial work but I've never seen it used in a residential setting.

Am I the only one that noticed the random pairs of things on the counter below?

I'm in love with the wood wall and took 6.4 million screen shots of it {for research purposes, obviously}.

Apparently this was the only image I managed to take of the lights that are in integrated into the wood, I love this feature.  I forget why he's climbing the wall but I still think it's funny.

I also really love the graphic and slightly retro wallpaper in the bedroom. I wish I knew who made it, I'd love to see their other patterns.

Are there any shows you watch for the set design?  I can't be the only one!

American Hustle

The other week I had a cavity filled, and on the way home I stopped at a thrift shop in the area.  I spotted a few things that I became slightly obsessed with and thought I needed to have.  I walked out the door and then right back in to talk to the cranky checkout lady.  When I asked about a lucite chandelier hanging near the register, she immediately became my new best friend.

The chain is a bit raggedy and it needs some cleaning but it will be a great chandelier some day.  And it has a story, apparently it was used on the set of American Hustle, a movie coming out the end of December, and then donated to the thrift shop along with these lamps and a ton of other items after filming.

So I guess having a cavity can sometimes lead to some good happening.  Now if only my dentist had put googly eyes on the tooth drawing he made for me.  That would have made the day perfect!

Fashion King - Set Design

Saying I only watched Fashion King for the set design kind of makes me feel like a guy who swears he only reads Playboy for the articles. But I'm serious...really.  I have to admit having a strong stomach for bad movies.  When my sister and I were young, we would get the tv guide that came in the paper and look for 2 star movies to watch.  So, despite being warned off repeatedly by others, I was in for the long haul on this one.  After finally finishing it, I wouldn't recommend that anyone else actually waste the time to see it but the reviews are fun to read.  The most accurate one reads {and I loosely quote}, "watch this drama if you are stuck on a plane for 20 hours and feel like being angry for 15 of them."

Watching the first few episodes I kept thinking I should know where they were shooting the show and then I saw the doors.  I don't pay too much attention to Tory Burch {I feel like she has giant logos on everything and I'm not into that} but I do like the interior of this store.

Apparently the upstairs of the Seoul store was made to look like her apartment.  I really like the orange lacquer everywhere and the lattice pattern on the railings.

There's also the sitting room with the purple and white which gives your eye a rest from all the orange.  These sofas magically changed half-way through the show from the darker purple with white trim to a white with purple stripes. I think I prefer the lighter sofas.

Some of her sketches even make it into a few shots.

As a side note, I kept wondering why they were all talking into their iPads, but it turns out Samsung makes giant smartphones now.  My phone is the same flip phone the main character used when he was poor....it seems to make appearances now and then in different dramas so it must be the director recycling phones.

On the first show I was thinking the phones were hugely oversized and awkward like Zac's phone below.  After seeing them a few times and thinking about it, they make sense.  You can't really do anything comfortably with a tiny iPhone so a larger one would be so much nicer.

New Girl

At home I have bunny ears and a digital converter box for my television which makes for some pretty annoying tv watching I must say, so I usually watch most of my shows online. I managed to get myself a pretty nasty cold and the work that I was supposed to be doing gave me a headache so I decided to catch up on shows {which I usually 'watch' on a tiny window on my computer when I'm doing other things}.  Since I wasn't multi-tasking today, I happened to notice this bedroom on New Girl. 

It's super cute, so while I was lying around recovering and avoiding work that made my head hurt, I decided to do fun things that made my head hurt like putting together rooms inspired by this bedroom.

The first version is closest to the original bedroom but I liked the blue side cabinet instead of red, there are some red in the second version and all three of these are pretty mix and match.

The second version leans a bit toward the spice colors.  I really did like the fabric though so I grabbed some other items to go in the mix.

The next is a bit more modern and slightly less girly {mostly because it's minus the tole lamps and some of the pom-pom pillows and the lighting is sleeker and more modern}.  This one is probably my favorite.

Illuminated Artwork

I found this image I had saved because of the artwork.  I love that the words are lit and that they are reflected in the glass.  I'm unsure of the artist but I did find another that says, "We See What We Want".

Coffee Prince

I've been at it again.  I found another K-drama and {luckily?} got sick while watching it so I could spend a day in bed watching episode after episode.  For some reason I find them addicting, but I have cut myself off until I get my taxes done...

The latest series I watched was Coffee Prince which was cute, but what really caught my eye were the lights in the coffee shop.  They are simple pendants with a silver band across the center which may even hide an ugly fluorescent bulb {mostly} from view.

 

I have no idea who manufactures this light, I've never seen it before but there are plenty of other similar lights.

The Globo di Luce Pendant by Roberto Menghi {at DWR} is beautiful, shiny and pricey.

There is a lower priced Globe Pendant from West Elm {with an exposed bulb} which is simple and pretty but doesn't have the silver strip which is what sets the first light apart from the rest.

I'll have to be on the lookout to see if I can find out the manufacturer.  I'd love to know.

I liked this series better than the last if only because I didn't have to use box after box of tissues and also wasn't tempted to make more kimchi.  I made some after the last series from this recipe {I don't eat fish so it's safer to make my own without the fish sauce} and still have about 3 pounds left!  Kimchi anyone?

Set Design - Ugly Betty

I love Ugly Betty's set design {by production designer, Mark Worthington}.  It's modern, simple and so vibrant it makes me happy.  I think the biggest reason I'm drawn to the set is because I love the curves that are used throughout.  Left to my own devices, I will put curves in any office project I can.  I don't do it on purpose but somehow, they always wind up in there.

One of my favorite parts is the ever-changing corridor.

I really love this round window and the wide textured frame around it.

Even the hospital rooms are stylish.  I can't say I've ever seen a hospital this nice in my life.

Is it terrible that there are numerous shows I watch more for the set than the show {I have to actually like the show to do this but the storyline is not the main reason I watch a handful of shows}.
